PROVISIONAL PSYCHOLOGY
A provisional psychologist is someone who has completed their tertiary qualifications and is eligible to undertake a program of supervision (internship) as they develop their applied skills “on the job”.

Provisional registration is the last step in the long process to becoming a fully registered psychologist.  It involves regular supervision and support while working to ensure they have the skills the skills to assist clients, address the issue presented.  They regularly meet with their individual supervisor to discuss progress and to check in that they are applying appropriate evidence based interventions developing core competencies, meeting APS code of ethics and meeting the requirement of formal processes of reporting to the board during the internship.

Provisional psychologists require 1 to 2 years of supervision/internship before being eligible to apply for full registration.

We offer reduced fees for sessions with our Provisional Psychologists.  Sessions with a provisional psychologist are not eligible for Medicare or Private Health rebates.

NEUROPSYCHOLOGY
Neuropsychological services can be useful in the diagnosis (including determining the current impact of brain change) and management of:

  • Behavioural and psychological problems stemming from altered brain function
  • Neurodegenerative disorders (eg. Alzheimer’s disease, young-onset dementias, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease).
  • Traumatic or acquired brain injury
  • Cerebrovascular accident (stroke)
  • Neurological disorders (eg. epilepsy, brain tumour)
  • Neuropsychiatric disorders, other mental health conditions and substance abuse (e.g., alcohol or drug use)
  • Previously unidentified developmental and learning disorders in adults (eg. Intellectual disability, dyslexia)
  • Other medical illnesses that can affect cognitive function (eg. autoimmune disorders or endocrine dysfunction)

While most referrals to OPTIMIND Psychologists come via your doctor (GP) or a Psychiatrist, you can always refer yourself. If your doctor refers you onto a mental health care plan, you are eligible for Medicare rebates. Alternatively, check with your health care fund to see if private health rebates apply.
