Dr Claassen is a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist who first trained in South Africa and then New Zealand. He obtained his Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) in 2014 and completed an Advanced Training Certificate in the field of Forensic Psychiatry. Dr Claassen has worked at senior medical managerial level in Australia since 2015, in both regional and metropolitan settings.
He is passionate about service co-design, supported decision making platforms of care, and health outcomes-based care delivery. As a forensic psychiatrist, he has experience in the provision of psychiatric reports pertaining to a range of issues, including the presence of mental illness, fitness to stand trial, aspects relating to disposition, violence risk assessment and availability of the mental impairment (or insanity) defense for adults, older adults, and adolescents. He is a seasoned expert witness in the Court arena.
